Each year Redeemer takes a special offering at Thanksgiving – an offering that is above and beyond our normal gifts. This year the Finance Team has dedicated these gifts to fight childhood hunger in Clinton County through the Weekend Survival Kits Program and Compassion in Action. In Michigan 1 in 5 Children Suffer From Hunger! Hunger hurts everyone, but it is especially devastating during childhood because hunger deprives children of more than just food throughout the day. With an empty stomach, kids don’t have the energy to focus, confidence to succeed, or ability to engage, learn and grow. Highlighted below is how your Thanksgiving gift will make a difference for many students in the DeWitt & St. Johns area.
Weekend Survival Kits
Weekend Survival Kits is a local organization that supplies backpacks filled with food for eligible children each weekend by dropping them off to the local schools every Friday. Several Redeemer members help coordinate and participate in the backpack program for the DeWitt Public Schools and the Blended Learning Academy. Historically they supply 200-240 kits per month! The cost for each pack is around $4.25-$5.00. If there are 60 students in the program for 33 weeks of the school year the cost for the Dewitt program is approx. $8415 per year. Compassion in Action Food Program
Compassion in Action (CIA) has been providing supplemental food to students and families in need in the St. Johns community since May 2016. CIA is a food backpack program whose mission is to provide supplemental food to students in need while spreading compassion throughout our community. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, we have modified our food distribution program to better meet the needs of the community. We are still providing backpacks/boxes of food twice a month to students (for pickup at Gracepointe Wesleyan Church). This is non-perishable food available to students and families in St. Johns with no qualifications or eligibility requirements. For more information, please contact Mark and Denise Palmer; 517-449-7135 (Denise) or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Both of these programs are supported by financial donations from the community. Redeemer is excited to support the local students in the DeWitt & St. Johns community in these two ministries, through prayers and financial support.
